3-Ring Circus Felt Birthday Crown
I’ve wanted to try out felt crafts for a while now. I recently had to waste a day in Fargo, ND so I hit up all of the great shopping spots. Michaels, Petsmart, Sallys. Then I had a nice solo lunch India Palace where I tried to fit as much of the meal in my body as I could. I still had several hours to waste and along with them my leftovers (remember 2 hours for leftovers kids). I love India Palace, the food is so, so good.

Anyway, felt crafts. At Michaels they had packs of acrylic felt with different groupings of colors. So I got a couple of those and then singular sheets to fill in the gaps of colors that were missing. You can get similar felt packs on Amazon. I’ve been seeing all of these cute ornaments tutorials on facebook so I had to make sure I had all of the colors I might want.
I went with acrylic felt because it was the most readily available to me, but most tutorials tell you to go for wool felt, which I’m sure is much nicer to work with and technically the proper material. Oh well, the plastic stuff works for me and it looks just as pretty and I’m sure the price is a little bit better, and no risk of allergy… probably (I’m not a doctor).
I also bought a bunch of embroidery floss and wow, DMC brand adds up fast. Oof. Worth it though, I suppose. I’ve been buying Coats and Clark multipacks of embroidery thread at Walmart and that’s actually been working great for me. It doesn’t have numbers or color names and a limited selection, but that’s fine. The thread is a little less shiny I think than DMC but that’s fine for what I use it for. DMC brand threads were a little cheaper at my walmart than at Michaels. I should have purchased at Walmart first. Oh well, live and learn I guess.
Anyway, the reason we’re all here. The craft I made. I’ve been seeing people make these super cute birthday crowns for their kids, talking about making traditions out of it. I don’t have any kids of my own, but I do know several children and one of them has a birthday coming up at the end of October. So I thought, how hard could it be? (boys do it…probably).

Turns out, hardly hard at all. I was able to turn this out in a week, bad hands and all. It came together actually really quickly and my process was pretty simple.
Get a crown template, print it out to the size I needed. (I had to get the head measurement from the child’s parent. That was not something I felt confident estimating.) Then find pictures and print them out so they fit on the crown template. (I would share this step, but I definitely didn’t “get permission” for any of the images I used since this is for personal use and not for sale.) Then just cut out each piece of the paper, and transfer it to the felt and then sew it down.
The internet gave me this great tip to use clear packing tape to tape down the very small pieces of paper to the felt and then cutting it out that way. So easy.
Oh I almost forgot, on my shopping trip I bought myself some Fiskars spring loaded scissors. They are a crafter’s dream, and amazing for my bad hands. They work just like garden clippers so you only have to do the squeezing motion, not the opening motion. (I also bought myself a very nice stapler for some upcoming paper chains. It has a pencil sharpener in the back of it. What???)
The child’s birthday theme is Three Ring Circus. Not my personal favorite, but it makes sense for a child turning 3 years old. I looked up other circus felt crafts that people have made, and somehow there was not as much as I expected. But as we all know searching the internet these days kind of sucks (I miss when Pinterest was good).

So these images are technically traced. But it’s for personal use and not for sale.
I highly recommend trying this out, even if all you do is sew some sequins to some fabric.
